This class is a mix of free-association exercises, simple art-making, conversation, and learning how we tell stories without words. The goal is to offer participants a chance to explore and nurture their creative voice, and develop a deeper understanding of how we communicate through images and the Elements and Principles of Design… things like line, color, perspective, texture, and space.

character development
Age of Student: 9 to 18 years old
Length of Class: 2 hours

In this class, students will develop their own characters by answering a series of questions, and making sketches with notes. Then they will come together to create a one-act, one-scene screenplay that includes each student’s character.

survey of art
Age of Student: 9 to 18 years old
Length of Class: There are 20 one-hour lessons in this class. These lessons are designed with two possibilities in mind: If a facilitator has a longer period of time to fill with instruction/activities, each of the 20 lessons builds upon one another. However, if a facilitator only has an hour that can be dedicated to instruction/activities, then one of the 20 classes can be selected that works best for the particular group the facilitator is working with.
In class, students will be introduced to the elements of art. We explore line, shape, texture, space, and color. We think about how these things morph between aesthetic choices and storytelling devices. We think about visual metaphors and symbols, and how simple things like asymmetrical shapes make us feel differently than symmetrical shapes.
